Why monitor the density of seagrass in the bays behind Assateague Island?
Annual aerial surveys are used to identify visible seagrass beds. These aerial photographs are verified with ground surveys by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. From this data collection and analysis, the park is able to detect early signs of seagrass loss in the bays.
